Statement of Purpose: The Liturgical Christianity Portal exists to introduce Christians and non-Christians alike to the practices of early Christianity, provide resources for those looking to introduce the liturgical tradition to their own congregations, and allow liturgical Christians to fellowship together in a friendly environment.

Q. What exactly is a liturgical church?

A. Generally speaking, the liturgical tradition includes Anglicans, Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and many Protestant groups. While each of the groups has some variation in their beliefs, they’re united by following forms of worship that were in use during or just after the apostolic era.

Q. What are some of the beliefs that set liturgical traditions apart from, say, evangelicals?

A. Some of these include forms of worship similar to those known in the 1st and 2nd centuries, adherence to the major Creeds as a statement of belief, following the traditional Church calendar, and an emphasis on the importance of baptism and communion in the life of a Christian.

Q. What does liturgical mean?

A. It refers to Christian worship as being a “work of the people”-worship is an experience to fully participate in, not about entertainment or merely listening to speakers.

Q. Aren’t these traditions “baptized” pagan customs the Romans added?

A. While some aspects of the liturgical tradition share similarities with existing pagan customs, the base for foundation historic Christian beliefs is Scripture. Worth noting is that most liturgical traditions came into being long before Christianity became the religion of the Roman Empire.
